Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague: A playful tribute and declaration of love for cinema

Looking at the genesis I was suffocating and the Godar revolution, Linklater signs a love letter to French cinema and creative freedom. New wave perceives itself as both an erudite comedy and a manifesto of a free director.

We had to dare: to come to present it in competition at the Cannes Festival New waveAmerican film director Richard Linklater could not have hoped for a better setting for his confession of love for cinema. But it was also a risk to project in the temple of world cinema an exercise in a style that could appear blasphemous in the eyes of purist moviegoers. Michel Hazanavicius faced the same fears eight years ago Sadwho shares with New wave a decisive slant consisting of a dynamite biopic or period film by way of pastiche. Godaran incomparable inventor, rule-breaker and defiant formalist, he ran out of ideas – and, as the film shows, stopped shooting for the day when he ran out of ideas.

New wave therefore embraces this a priori dilettante tone, in which spontaneity takes precedence, in a free form that resonates with a band embarking on an adventure of creation. A youth who improvises, who seeks to overturn all that academism has been able to fix until now, with the audacious audacity that the unconsciousness of amateurism allows. It is also one of the good ideas of the film – to offer a number of actors unknown to the general public to play the future legends of the seventh art, Belmondo, Godard, Truffaut, Chabrol, Resientcameraman Raul Kutar or producer Georges de Beauregard. The only experienced actress Zoe Deutsch (with which Linklater really wanted to work again after their cooperation Everyone wants some !! in 2016) which does not lack connectivity as it embodies Jean Sebergan American star lost in the middle of this little French revolution.

New wave this is, of course, a film for cinephiles, which will simultaneously capture vivid scenes of the creation of how American night with Truffautand strive to tell as accurately and comprehensively as possible the anecdotes of historical filming: it is assumed that names disappear, the names of various heroes appear on the screen in front of them, as a fanatical moviegoer has already done. Tarantino in One day… in Hollywood. more Linklater also does not idealize the figure of the demiurge, but introduces a form of humor perfectly summed up in the way a woman points out the director to a character about to meet him: “CHe is Godard, he is a genius. At least that’s what he will tell you.“. An arrogant and troubled figure (he’s one of the last Kayers to start directing), he runs a feverish campaign to smuggle in the footage to avoid having to ask for permits or pay extras shot in secret.

Without too much fictional binding, the film thus unfolds a series of anecdotes modeled on what will happen JLG future, with plenty of aphorisms and beautifully documented improvisations. And one of the greatest charms of this everyday adventure is that all moviegoers know about the cult fate of the film in the making, most of whose characters are convinced that it will never see the light of day.
