Berlin (DPA) – Germany has reacted with great grief to the death of former federal President Horst Kohaler. Federal Chancellor Olaf Sholaz paid tribute to Kohrar’s “life commitment to a fair world”. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmier called him “a blessing for our country”. Kohaler died at the age of 81. He was elected head of the state of Germany on 23 May 2004 and was re -elected after five years. Despite being one of the most popular public authorities of his time, he resigned on 31 May 2010. Africa – a great passion
Internationally, Kohaler was mainly involved with Africa, both as the head of the IMF and the federal president. He campaigned for a partnership with the continent at a uniform rung. He played a role after resigning as a federal president, which became the United Nations Special Envoy for Western Sahara Sangharsh. Steinmier also insisted on Kohaler’s commitment to a fair dealing with Africa – “The continent he was so emotional and whom he knew so well”. Kohaler strongly admitted that Europe should abandon its colonial mindset and behave as equal partners to African countries, said Steinmier. “In that sense he was ahead of his time.”
