Kylian Mbappe pays tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo on record-equaling night


Kylian Mbappe found the back of the net in the closing stages of Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Sevilla to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record for most goals in a calendar year.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been Los Blancos’ top scorer for the past 12 years. 59 goals since 2013. No other player wearing a white shirt has achieved the historic feat.

Fast forward to 2025 and Mbappé has done just that. The French player finished the year with 59 goals Real Madrid to etch his name into the club’s history books alongside his childhood hero.

Just when it looked like Ronaldo would hold his record, Rodrigo won the home side a penalty and Mbappe calmly converted from 12 yards in the 86th minute. This goal earned his team three points and made history.

Of Mbappe’s 59 goals for Real Madrid this year, 30 came in the second half of his record-breaking debut campaign. Another 29 people were under the leadership of Xabi Alonso.

The French international leads the team in scoring in the 2025-26 season League and Champions League. Next up is Vinicius Junior, who has just five goals this season.

After Mbappe buried his record-breaking goal, 27-year-old Ronaldo honored the legend by scoring at the iconic venue.

“Today I tied the record of my idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, the greatest player in the history of this club,” Mbappe said after the final whistle. “My holiday was dedicated to him. He is my friend and my hero.”

The former star of Paris Saint-Germain will try to continue his sensational start to the season in the new year. Los Blancos have a two-week holiday break before returning to action against Real Betis on January 4.

“Madridistas, Bernabeu people and people from all over the world have always been with us. We want the same thing. We will give our lives for this shield. They are not just words, we want to take care of this sign and the great history of Real Madrid,” Mbappe promised.
