After defeating Girona in the Phase game of our final phase of the Champions League, we secured third place in the 36-team table and a covenant place in the last 16 of the competition.
This means that we skip the circle of the playoff in the next month, but whom we can stand up to after this is completed and what are the benefits of our impressive displays in Europe so far?
Here’s what we have to do and why it matters:
Only Liverpool and Barcelona finished over us in the table. The Reds were defeated with 3-2 PSV Eindhoven to prevent them from achieving a clean cleaning of eight wins from eight, while Barca attracted 2-2 with Atalanta to see them also fail to finish with victory.
The only team that beat us on stage in the league was Inter Milan and they finished the level of points with us after defeating Monaco 3-0, but that wasn’t enough to rework our superb difference in target, so We stood in third place.
Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen held in their places thanks to the victory of Matchday 8 over RB Salzburg and Sparta Prague, while Lille and Aston Villa were the big winners at night as they slipped into the front eight with big victories over Feyenord and Celtic.
Atalanta and Ak Milan got out of the first eight in the last game and descended into the playoff. Our opponents of the match one day struggled hard for 2-2 in Barcelona, while Milan fell to a surprising 2-1 loss to another of our previous opponents, Dynamo Zagreb.
The latest finalists Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint -Germain, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich have passed while Manchester City and Sporting Lisbon have just scraped in the last 32 in the last game.
Also, through PSV Eindhoven, Monaco, Brest, Feyenoord, Celtic and Club Brugge, which clung to the 26th and last place to remain in a dispute.
Dynamo Zagreb just missed the difference in target as Stuttgart suffered a costly defeat against PSG to see them fall into the elimination places.
Two of our enemies, the League phase, also miss Donetsk and Girona in the Chahkhtar, while young boys, Slovan Bratislava, Salzburg, Leipzig, Sparta Prague, Sterm Graz, Red Star Belgrade and Bologna have seen their European adventures.
By finishing as high as possible in the table, the teams more to help their chances of facing a mid-rank team in the League table in the last 16, not one of those who have just missed.
Teams that have previously encountered each other in the League phase or are from the same country may also be opponents from the stage of knockout on.
By the time we finish, we will now face the winners of the playoffs between the teams, which ended on the 13th or 14th or 19th or 19th. The teams that ended in these positions are Milan (13th), PSV Eindhoven (14th), Feyenoord (19th) and Juventus (20th).
In addition to the increased money of EUR 275,000 on the spot, another advantage of completing the top four sees us effectively sowing, avoiding both Liverpool and Barcelona until at least the semifinals.
All the teams that remain in the race are placed in a bracket to help everyone draw their potential routes to the final.
This left the following situations that could be held in the playoff circle and a round of 16:
Monaco or Brest vs. Paris Saint -Germain or Benfica (for the right to play Liverpool or Barcelona)
Sporting Lisbon or Club Brugge vs Atalanta or Borussia Dortmund (for the right to play Lil or Aston Villa)
Celtic or Manchester City against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich (for the right to play Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen)
Feyenoord or Juventus vs AC Milan or PSV Eindhoven (for the right to play Arsenal or Inter Milan)
Brest or Monaco vs. Benfica or Paris Saint -Germain (for the right to play Barcelona or Liverpool)
Club Brugge or Sporting Lisbon vs. Borussia Dortmund or Atalanta (for the right to play Aston Villa or Lille)
Manchester City or Celtic against Bayern Munich or Real Madrid (for the right to play Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid)
Juventus or Feyenoord vs PSV Eindhoven or AC Milan (for the right to play Inter Milan or Arsenal)
On Friday, January 31, there will be a draw for the playoff circle to determine which teams will encounter who next month.
Then, as the playoff circle is over, on Friday, February 21, there will be another draw to determine which of the two winners in the playoff we will encounter. One thing that is certain is that the highest place guarantees that the second match of our last 16 tie will be played at the Emirates Stadium, but from the quarterfinals onwards the equality will dictate this.
